Retail shop signage in a shopping centre in Cardiff

A kebab shop changed ownership and needed to update all their retail take away shopfront signage. The new Safura Kebabs and Curries in Cardiff inside Cardiff Shopping Plaza near Newcastle had to remove the old naming so they could commence trading. So they started getting quotes for sign writers in Newcastle to see what options were available and how much it could cost. They wanted to spend as little as possible because the new retail lease had just been signed & they needed to generate an income quickly.

The sign writing design brief that we received from Safura was really simple;

  • Using our sign writing expertise what was the most cost effective way to update the retail shop front signage that was already in place?
  • What could be printed to use as retail signage
  • Was it possible to remove and install new signage and minimise any disruption to retail trade
 

The first thing we did was to do a site visit to understand the scope of the work, assess the signage already in place and work on a few solutions. We also had to liase with the retail shopping centre management to understand any OH&S as well as brand guideline regulations & then eventually once everything was approved we removed the old naming & replace it with new signage.

What was the most cost effective way to update this retail signage?

Well the old retail signage was basically vinyl decals placed over the top of an existing background that had been created by a graphic designer to suit the brand identity of this business. We came up with a sign writing solution that would make it easy to remove the decals from the existing signage without damaging the background and then replace them with a new vinyl application of the new name.

This meant the signage didn’t have to get completely removed, printed & re-installed, so it was cheaper, faster & just as effective.

So the new owner could very quickly change the name from the previous owner and begin trading to attract new or existing customers. We were able to complete this within a week from start to finish so there was little disruption to their business. It was very intricate work we had to do as we needed to began with removing the white vinyl with the black vinyl underlay of the old signs, on the fascia and inner walls. Then we finished off the removal by cleaning off the adhesives, and finishing with the install of the new graphics bearing the new name. This was unusual because you usually don’t get the chance to remove and replace part of the vinyl while keeping the printed graphics, usually you would print completely new signage.

 

Another aspect we had to manage during the installation was that the fascia was over 10ft tall, and required a platform ladder to accurately complete the job safely. This sign writing installation took 2 half days to complete because we had to adhere to the safety guidelines provided by the shopping centre management team which meant no ladders could be used past 9 am once trading commenced.

The total budget for this sign writing work would normally cost between $1000 and $3000 ex gst depending on how large the signage is and how many visits are required to complete it. We used Avery Denison 800 Series vinyl, Graphic Art Mart application tape, Avery Denison surface cleaner, platform ladder and plastic razor blade scrappers to complete it.

Once all the new takeaway shop signage design had been approved they were scheduled to be printed and delivered to the location to be installed. The installation of this new signage as we mentioned above needed to be scheduled around the shopping centre’s OH&S requirements.

What other types of signage could this take away shop in Hamilton?

For this project the focus was simply changing the name that could be seen inside the shopping centre. Depending on the tenancy requirements this take away shop could have used signage in different ways to promote itself. Temporary signage can be used that is placed outside the shop or food delivery vehicle signage can promote a take away shop anytime the vehicle is being driven in the local area;

  • Vehicle signage; The simplest method is to get sign writing to have the company logo graphics applied to the doors and bonnet, although you can also do a full vehicle wrap which has a photo of the take away shop or even their food, their address and website details so that it is a mobile billboard, literally. A van, ute, suv or even a scooter could be wrapped to create interest and awareness.
 
  • A Frame signage; depending on the shopping centre restrictions an A Frame sign could be placed near the main walkway inside the shopping area to attract attention. If they were to order a chalk board A Frame then they could have menu or specials for different days or other information to share with people to attract them inside.
 
  • Portable banners; lots of take away shops have permission to have a small area for seating for customers to use. By getting portable banners they can be used as dividers to not only brand your space, but create an area that feels separated to the rest of the shopping centre. It creates a visual barrier and space to promote your brand at the same time.
 
  • Banner flags; depending on the shopping centre restrictions banner flags may be able to get used to promote the new ownership. They can catch someone’s eye with their height and it is something different for people to notice inside a shopping centre as they walk by.
 
  • Menu board signage: inside a typical take away shop is menu board signage that shows the range, in this case they retained the available menu so didn’t need to change it. Although if the take away shop was being changed from a kebab shop to maybe a juice bar then the menu signage would need to be changed.
